Unmasking the Curse takes place in an intricately detailed fantasy world with creative nods toward Regency Era, England.
As a teen, I fell in love with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice after viewing Sir Laurence Olivier and Greer Garrison one late night on AMC. I became obsessed with Pride and Prejudice, consuming the storyline in various forms. It stoked my love for the novels, retellings, and other books set in the Regency Era.
Silas possesses many similar characteristics to Byronic Heroes, like Mr. Darcy. Most of Silas’s life is spent sequestered in his childhood home and estate, Belmont Manor, in the hills of Presspin, where he must harbor the secrets of his past. He is broody, dark, and quite sullen until he crosses paths with Arianna Park.
Arianna is a cursed woman, bound to a porcelain mask to suppress the destructive power within her. Unlike Elizabeth Bennett, Arianna is unsure of herself. She has suffered from years of trauma inflicted upon her by her societal systems, her mother, and the Aralians who oversee the suppression of her curse. However, much like Elizabeth Bennett, she possesses a strong sense of familial loyalty and a willingness to sacrifice for her sister.
Unmasking the Curse possesses a similar vibe to Pride and Prejudice. However, is not a beat for beat retelling but an inspirational starting point. The Regency Era inspired the world in which Unmasking the Curse, specifically in the territories of Hallowhaven, Krella, and Daviel.
In addition, there is a looming undercurrent similar to Beauty and the Beast regarding curse-magic.
